The Open Quantum Institute in Geneva
Quantum computing technology could help solve some of the great issues of our time. Climate, biodiversity, food security and epidemics all require computer-based models, and the OQI will allow for universal access to technologies allowing advanced modelling.
On Friday, 13 October 2023, federal councilor Ignazio Cassis, head of the Federal Departement of Foreign Affairs, announced that the Open Quantum Institute would be hosted at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).
A key initiative of the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipator (GESDA), OQI will be an integral part of Geneva, the first multilateral hub in the world, host of about 40 international organizations and hundreds of NGOs.
Key global issues such as climate, biodiversity, health, trade and many more are being discussed and decisions are being made. Being in Geneva, OQI will ensure that the computing power of quantum computers will be available to international organizations, leaving no-one behind, and to progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
